China announced plans to establish Xiong'an New Area on April 1, 2017, to relieve Beijing of functions non-essential to its role as the national capital and advance the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The Winter Olympic Cultural Square in Xiongan New Area, which covers more than 128,000 square meters, integrates functions of entertainment and landscaping. The giant electronic screen will live-stream the opening and closing ceremonies and all events of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
Beijing and Xiongan New Area will need systematic cooperation to achieve coordinated development and mitigate urban ills, experts said on Sunday.
